CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

The Safety & Risk Management Coordinator provides technical education and training to promote employee safety and health; works closely with the City’s management staff, human resources and legal departments to ensure compliance with all federal and state rules and regulations; manages citizen and employee claims programs. This is a single position classification and is not part of a series.

The following list reflects the essential job duties and responsibilities of this classification, but should not be considered all-inclusive. The incumbent will be expected to perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Researches, develops and implements written occupational safety and health programs and policies concerning the responsibilities of managers, supervisors and other employees throughout the City.
  • Remains current on federal and state occupational safety and health laws and regulations, including reporting and recordkeeping requirements, and monitors regulatory changes as they occur.
  • Promotes occupational safety and health awareness through various training programs, and serves as the City’s representative on employee safety committees.
  • Participates in various process evaluations and reviews, including job hazard analyses, and participates in selecting and procuring appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Identifies and analyzes causes, patterns or trends relating to employee safety issues and develops recommendations to resolve potential issues.
  • Reviews injury/illness, incident and near-miss reports and conducts investigations or other necessary follow-up as appropriate.
  • Administers the City’s claims management process for receiving, monitoring and resolving claims or potential claims against the City, including citizen claims for damages and employee claims for on-the-job injuries.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health or related field and at least three years of experience developing, implementing and overseeing safety programs and/or administering claims programs, or any combination of relevant education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties listed above.

  • Must pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Must maintain a level of mental and physical fitness required to perform the essential functions of this classification. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification and Associate of Risk Management (ARM) certification are highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To perform the essential functions of the classification, incumbents must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Must demonstrate extensive working knowledge of federal and state and occupational safety and health laws and regulations, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Washington Administrative Code.
  • Must demonstrate high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
  • Must demonstrate ability to read, understand, interpret and explain policies, procedures, rules, regulations and legal requirements to a diverse audience.
  • Must demonstrate excellent problem solving, analytical ability and decision-making ability.
  • Must demonstrate excellent attention to detail.
  • Must occasionally travel outside of the immediate area for training opportunities.
  • Must maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • This position does not have any direct supervisory responsibility but serves as a coach and mentor to the City’s managers, supervisors and other employees.

Supplemental Requirements:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform the essential functions of the classification, incumbents must be able to meet the following physical requirements: must regularly talk and hear; must regularly sit, stand and walk; must regularly lift and move objects up to 30 pounds.

WORK SCHEDULE

The initial work schedule for this classification will be Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the option of working a flexible schedule. Early mornings, evenings and weekend work may be occasionally required. This classification is exempt under the FLSA.
