Description
The Medical Assistant Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and supporting medical assistants at all levels while ensuring efficient clinical operations and compliance with practice policies. This role combines clinical expertise with administrative responsibilities, including scheduling, performance management, and collaboration with supervisors and leadership. The supervisor also serves as a resource for clinical issues and fosters team collaboration to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities - Oversee day-to-day activities of the Medical Assistant (MA) team, including Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Senior Certified MAs (Level 4).
- Act as a liaison between medical assistants, management, and clinical care providers to address operational and personnel-related concerns.
- Assign and adjust daily schedules to ensure optimal staffing, workflow, and patient care delivery.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and support professional development for the MA team.
- Onboard and train new medical assistants, ensuring alignment with organizational protocols.
- Ensure adherence to clinic policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Clinical Responsibilities: Perform advanced clinical duties as a working supervisor, including but not limited to:
- Preparation of patients for exams and procedures.
- Obtaining vital signs, medical history, and performing basic diagnostic procedures as needed.
- Administering medications or injections under provider direction.
- Assisting providers with minor procedures.
- Serve as the clinical expert/resource for medical assistants on complex tasks and procedures.
- Maintain high standards of patient care and safety, ensuring proper handling of supplies, equipment, and documentation.
Administrative Responsibilities: - Collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership to identify operational improvements and implement solutions.
- Monitor compliance with training, certifications, and licensure requirements for the MA team.
- Track attendance, align PTO requests with staffing needs, and manage overall staff schedules.
- Document and report on team performance trends, identifying gaps and areas for enhancement.
- Investigate and address patient or provider concerns related to MA services timely and effectively.
Qualifications and Skills Education and Certifications: - Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
- Certified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) certification required.
- BLS/CPR certification required.
Experience: - Minimum of 4-5 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, including experience performing advanced clinical duties.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a clinical setting strongly preferred.
Skills and Competencies: - Strong knowledge of clinical practices and medical terminology, built upon experience from MA-1 through MA-4 roles.
- Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and multitasking capabilities.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills for managing staff and collaborating across departments.
- Leadership abilities to effectively manage, motivate, and develop team members.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems and general office technology.
Physical Requirements: - Ability to stand or sit for extended periods, as well as bend, kneel, and lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
- Perform tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment with potential exposure to biohazards.
