Job Description

Innovative Refrigeration Systems is seeking a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer with 2-5 years of experience to join our team in Lyndhurst, VA. In this role, you will leverage your experience to design some of the largest, most complex, and technically innovative natural refrigeration systems in the nation. Working closely with senior engineers and project teams, you will take on significant responsibility for system design and optimization, while continuing to grow and develop your expertise in the field.

Innovative Refrigeration Systems, Inc. is a premier custom design build contractor for industrial refrigeration systems, providing design, fabrication, construction, commissioning, and service in-house.

Job Role: A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for creating and optimizing refrigeration system designs that use natural refrigerants, such as ammonia and CO2. This role involves developing detailed mechanical plans, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring designs meet both performance and sustainability goals, while adhering to industry standards and safety regulations.

Key Duties:

  • Lead the design of mechanical rooms, rooftop penthouses, piping systems, and other components associated with industrial refrigeration systems for cold storage warehouses.
  • Perform advanced engineering calculations for system design, including tolerance dimensions, thermal analysis, and structural considerations.
  • Ensure designs are compliant with company procedures, industry regulations, and client standards.
  • Review and submit detailed drawings to upper management, fabrication teams, and construction teams for approval.
  • Provide technical support during the building and installation process to ensure systems are built according to design specifications.
  • Build Bills of Materials (BOM) for each design and input data into the ERP system.
  • Collaborate with the fabrication team during the manufacturing process, offering technical expertise as needed.
  • Work with the purchasing team to ensure timely and accurate material orders.
  • Communicate with vendors regarding part specifications and fabrication requirements.
  • Occasionally mentor junior engineers, providing guidance on design best practices and technical issues.

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in mechanical system design.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Professional experience with AutoCAD or other CAD programs (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks).
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, with a focus on mechanical and refrigeration systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Occasional field travel to job sites may be required based on project need.

Preferences:

  • Experience in sheet metal and pipe fabrication.
  • EIT License.
  • Interest in pursuing a PE license.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems or previous HVAC/MEP experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, and crouch as necessary.
  • Ability to walk and bend frequently.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Occasional field travel to job sites required, with the ability to climb ladders up to 40 feet in height.
  • Comfortable working at heights on a job site.
