Are you committed to connecting people to primary sources? In support of a vibrant community of scholars and the public interested in the meaning and role of history, the Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University is open to everyone. The Library & Archives is a cultural heritage organization that encompasses library, archival, and museum functions. To support our active researcher population we are seeking enthusiastic, innovative, and service-oriented undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates for full time 10-14 week Summer Internship positions. This is an onsite position on Stanford University campus, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Applicants must begin the internship on June 17, 2024. Job Purpose Library & Archives Interns support increased summer research and reading room activity by completing daily circulation and reading room support while participating in a variety of projects under professional direction and guidance relating to Preservation/Conservation, Research Services, Collections Digitization, Collection Management, Description of Archival Materials, and Public Engagement (Exhibits, Education, and Outreach). Training is provided. Interns will come away with an understanding of library special collections and archival principles and experience in: Preventive and interventive basic preservation and conservation techniques, such as proper handling, cleaning, housing and stabilizing collection materials and awareness of storage and environmental conditions Conducting quality reference assistance, both in-person and remote Inner workings and logistics behind paging and the circulation of library and archival materials Basics of digital preservation and digital repositories Required Qualifications Responsible, organized, punctual, conscientious, detail-oriented, and committed to the care of historical materials Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team as well as independently Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, organize and prioritize work, and act with initiative, good judgment, and problem solving skills Effective at meeting deadlines, adjusting priorities, and working on multiple projects simultaneously Experience with organizational office software, including Excel and databases Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a library, archives, museum, or other research setting Experience providing customer service to the public Reading knowledge of non-English language(s), preferably German, Russian, Polish, Chinese, French, Spanish, Japanese, or Arabic Physical Requirements* Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, and sort/file paperwork or parts, reach/work above shoulders, and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds Ability to lift 40 pound boxes and to push and maneuver fully loaded book trucks (push force up to 50 pounds) Good hand skills and eye/movement coordination *Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of his or her job. The expected pay rate for this position is $22.19-25 per hour. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
