Position Function:

The Health & Wellness Educator is responsible for the planning and implementing comprehensive health promotion programs and services as it relates to collegiate health and community engagement. The Health & Wellness Educator will advocate for policies, practices, and programs that align with the Division of Student Affairs and Health Promotion & Wellness guiding principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Develop, implement, and evaluate theory-based and evidence-Informed health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services relative to collegiate health and well-being.
2. Serve as the liaison for the Mississippi Coalition of Partners in Prevention (MCPP) by coordinating quarterly calls, managing the monthly MCPP newsletter, and collecting data.
3. Provide individual student services such as wellness coaching and motivational interviewing to help students navigate decision making about their health and well-being.
4. Lead, guide, and actively participate in training initiatives aimed at reducing student alcohol abuse.
5. Support data tracking and report development related to health promotion strategies, strategic planning, programs, services, and support department grant funding & reporting.
6. Assist with maintaining the Mississippi Department of Mental Health certification.
7. Co-lead the Step-Up State Bystander Intervention training and Recovery Ally training.
8. Actively participate on committees and division-wide initiatives such as the Collegiate Recovery Community Advisory Board, Tobacco-Free Coalition, Mississippians Advocating for Unhealthy Decisions, Student Affairs Professional Development team, etc.
9. Collaborate with key stakeholders on campus and in the community to develop a multidisciplinary approach to well-being by utilizing the 8 dimensions of wellness.
10. Supervised by Director, Health Promotion & Wellness; provides instruction and direction through personal observation, individual conferences, specific directives, and written memoranda; and supervises and/or volunteer student staff, interns, and practicum students.
11. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Education, Social Work, or related field.

Experience: 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Preferred Qualifications:
•Master's degree in health promotion, public health, education, or social work
•Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or eligible and intent to become certified.
•Three years related health promotion work experience, preferably in a higher education environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Working knowledge of health promotion on a college campus
•Ability to analyze problems, conduct research, implement solutions.
•Demonstrative interpersonal skills among internal and external stakeholders.
•Strong work ethics with ability to adhere to appropriate ethical guidelines.
•Skills required to work effectively in a complex organizational environment.
•Demonstrative and effective communication skills (written and verbal).
•Experience with grant management and coalition building.
•Knowledgeable of program evaluation, nutrition related Information and best practices.
•Ability to work effectively in a complex environment and adherence to appropriate ethical guidelines.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
•Requires physical effort of lifting of materials and programming information.
•Frequent- External imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues.
•Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
