ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Mission: Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) provides affordable housing and services for low-income people in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco, to promote equitable access to opportunity and resources.

Established in 1981, TNDC has grown to employ over 450 staff, to develop, own, manage, and provide supportive services in 44 properties that offer deeply affordable housing for nearly 6,100 tenants, and to expand its work in community organizing, food security and afterschool programming. TNDC is viewed as a trusted and well-organized community ally locally and a practice leader nationally. In San Francisco, TNDC envisions diverse communities where people with low incomes can fulfill their potential and meet their basic needs. SUMMARY

The Food Justice Community Organizer will:

* Coordinate the work of the Tenderloin Food Policy Council (TL FPC).

* Establish and coordinate the work of the SDDT Community Action Team, a workgroup of the TL FPC specifically for Chinese residents of the Tenderloin neighborhood.

* Provide leadership development support for TL FPC and SDDT Community Action Team members

* With Tenderloin residents, identify Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change strategies for increasing healthy food access.

* Collect and report on program data as required by funder (SF Department of Public Health).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under the direction of the Community Organizing Manager, the Food Justice Community Organizer's work includes:

Tenderloin Food Policy Council

* Oversee and provide support for the work of the Tenderloin Food Policy Council

* Convene Food Policy Council meetings.

* With Food Policy Council members, strategize about how to collectively address food justice issues affecting the Tenderloin community.

* Maintain notes, meeting attendance records, and communication with FPC members.

SDDT Community Action Team

* Convene 8-10 member SDDT Community Action Team composed of Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking Tenderloin residents.

* Identify and retain team members.

* Provide leadership development support for the Community Action Team members, including advocacy, training, and health education workshops.

* Maintain notes, meeting attendance records and communication with members.

TNDC Community Organizing Department

* Collaborate with staff of the Community Organizing department on base building and leadership development.

* Contribute to and support relevant legislation or policy initiatives and engage with allied coalitions.

* Act as the main point of contact for the execution of the Sugary Drinks Distributor Tax contract with San Francisco Department of Public Health.

* Expand and strengthen the resident base of the Community Organizing Department.

* Build and strengthen relationships with other local community-based organizations with a particular focus on healthy food access.

* Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS

* Experience with community organizing running and issue-based campaigns including conducting one-on-one relationship-building meetings, power mapping, direct action, capacity building, group management/facilitation, outreach and recruitment.

* Leadership skills, creative thinking, conflict management, and strong interpersonal and organizational communication skills.

* A strong racial justice and gender justice analysis and ability to navigate issues of class, education, physical ability, and the intersections of power and privilege.

* Knowledge of the core principles of antiracism and ability to ground those principles in community organizing work.

* Prior experience working in an underserved, multi-cultural environment.

* Ability to build strong working relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders.

* Prior experience working with people with histories of trauma, mental illness, substance use, homelessness, or criminal justice system involvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Bilingual and biliterate in English and Mandarin and/or Cantonese.

* Proficient in Microsoft 365.

* Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university. Four years of experience, including lived experience, with organizing for social or racial justice, civic engagement, employee supervision, or grassroots leadership development can substitute for a four-year degree.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills.

* Able to attend evening meetings 3 times per month and to occasionally work on weekends.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Familiarity with the Tenderloin neighborhood.
