SUMMARY

The Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation's Community Organizing Department (CO Department) works on issues of social equity and justice in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods of San Francisco. The CO Department dedicates significant resources to food justice and access, community planning, leadership development, and other issues, while using a methodology of community engagement and empowerment. The Community Organizing Department is committed to building power for low-income people, communities of color, immigrants, and the LGBTQ community.

Under the direct supervision of the Community Organizing Manager, this role is responsible for supporting and furthering the Community Organizing Department's core work, with a particular focus on community and leadership development through a lens of racial equity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Community Organizer customarily and regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment in the following job duties:

* Prioritize support and leadership development of the BIPOC community.

* Work with our membership base to develop, execute, and win community-based campaigns which help to build community power.

* Conduct all campaigns, base building, and leadership development work through a racial justice lens.

* Supervise resident volunteers and leaders.

* Work with and support the Tenderloin People's Congress and committees.

* Staff and support working groups of the Tenderloin Community Action Plan.

* Tracking, attending, and testifying at public hearings; contributing to and supporting relevant legislation, engaging with coalitions, etc.

* Expand and strengthen the resident base of the Community Organizing Department.

* Support leadership development plan of the department.

* Build and strengthen relationships with other local community-based organizations.

* Improve evaluation tools and data management within the Community Organizing Department.

* Assist with local campaigns, speaking and advocating at City Hall on community issues.

* Collaborate and support the work of staff of the organizing department.

* Represent TNDC at various forums as necessary.

* Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS

* At least two years of experience working on Community Organizing campaigns.

* Self-motivation and initiative to take on projects with minimal supervision in timely manner.

* Excellent interpersonal skills including but not limited to: verbal and written communication, public speaking and conflict mediation.

* Sensibility and sensitivity to understand and effectively communicate the needs of low-income and working-class communities, and communities of color, with different City agencies, neighborhood stakeholders and other constituents.

* Sensitivity to the intersection of racial equity in all community organizing work.

* Ability to work within a close-knit team environment.

* Commitment to social justice and community organizing principles.

* Able to attend occasional evening meetings and work on some weekends.

* Harm reduction focus when working with community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Bilingual in English and at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian, Farsi, Arabic.

* Familiarity with the Tenderloin and SOMA neighborhoods.
